While it does work, you can't adjust the fineness setting with pepper in the unit. The manual was difficult to read, but once you figure it out its O.K. The reason for a '3' is the included batteries only last about 3 weeks. I upgraded to lithium rechargeable 1.5's and we will see how it goes. Once the pepper mill is setup, it does grind well, just not being able to adjust the fineness w/o the mill being empty is annoying. I kind of was spoiled with the 'manual' grinder where its just a click away. I LOVE the light. I won't return, but this is a hard sell given the battery and other settings.

My first one lasted 12 years of hard use/abuse. It's been great. Just ordered another one. I doubt there's a better one like it.
